HOUSE

Our shelter at 39 Kingston Street is also known as our “house”. There are 6 floors of the house, and thus, there are many projects that volunteers can assist with! Volunteer opportunities may include unloading/sorting/labeling donations, cleaning clots, washing/folding laundry, organizing shelves/cabinets, and deep cleaning.

ADMINISTRATIVE

Volunteer opportunities may include sorting/stocking/labeling supplies, organizing shelves/cabinets, and deep cleaning.

RESEARCH AND/OR OUTREACH
We are seeking volunteers interested in conducting affordable housing and employment searches for our shelter residents. This would entail online research and outreach efforts (including cold calls) to prospective affordable housing contacts and/or prospective employers. Interested volunteers can perform this task remotely or in person at Boston Rescue Mission.

MAINTENANCE

Due to the volume of clients and guests we serve each year, BRM requires a great deal of upkeep and repair. Maintenance volunteer duties may include deep cleaning, painting, repairing, and miscellaneous home improvement. Volunteers particularly talented in specific areas such as electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work are eagerly sought! This volunteer opportunity is evaluated on a case by case basis and varies depending on organizational needs.

TRANSPORTATION

We are seeking volunteers to drive our 15-passenger cargo van to pick up food donations from local restaurants and vendors. This includes driving to/from all locations to retrieve donations, loading all items onto the van using service carts/hand trucks, transporting all items back to the Mission, and unloading all donations. Additional driving tasks may arise based on need. Drivers should be able to and comfortable with lifting 50+ pounds. Volunteer drivers are an integral point of contact at vendor sites, and are a key representative of BRM. They must possess strong interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, and interact kindly with stakeholders. All volunteer drivers are required to have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record.
