Volunteering Across Generations
Members of the People's Baptist Church spread God's love (and food!) on the Boston Common
When Myra left corporate America 16 years ago, she thought “How can I teach my children to be obedient if I’m not being obedient to my call?” And so, she left the title and the money behind and began to volunteer with her pastor. Now she prioritizes service projects with church youth and young adults at places like the Boston Rescue Mission.
“It’s really important for everyone to show their love…for folks to come out of their own story and give back” says Myra. She brings groups to Saturday morning outreach on the Boston Common once a month, but has also come to prepare and serve Sunday afternoon meals and lead worship services during the week.
“We’ve grown up a lot of kids in the ministry, and now many are continuing that ministry as young adults. It’s really been generation to generation. I can recall being here and being connected as early as 40 years ago.”
“We’re here to encourage, to love, and to support. For somebody out there who thinks God doesn’t love them or they’re not worth it, they get the truth.”
